We offer a full range of beginning classes. Knitting, crochet, felting, weaving and spinning.

Knitting

Beginning Knitting with Pamela Burson **

Have you always wanted to learn to knit? Come and join others in this great introductory class as you master the techniques of casting on, using the basic stitches and casting off. You’ll start with making a basic cotton washcloth and will start on a scarf by the end of the classes. As a bonus, you’ll have unlimited access to experienced store staff between lessons. Cost is $80 Plus materials

 

Hats, Hats, Hats! with MarySue

Cables add incredible texture and depth to hats, stop on down for our free Saturday hat workshops. Let MarySue walk you through her original hat patterns or answer your "hat" questions. Learn all the hats, a headband option, and get help at each step along the way. You’ll be likely to finish the hat during the second class session and leave with a gift ready to wrap up! - Call the store to schedule a time to take this fantastic class! Requirement: Students must be comfortable with basic knitting stitches, increases and decreases.

 

The Magic of Garter Stitch

Margaret Maxwell, teacher of this two-hour class, is fascinated with garter stitch because there are so many flexible ways to use it. It is particularly useful when one doesn't have the exact amount of yarn for any certain pattern.

The first hour will be an illustrated presentation with samples of garter stitch projects. The second hour will be a chance to try out one of those project with coaching available. Bring something to take notes on for the first hour and a circular size 7 or 8 needle and some worsted weight yarn for the second hour.

 

 Knit One Below Hat Class with Margaret Maxwell

Come learn to make a hat with this amazingly simple, but elegant stitch. The stitch makes a thick, cushy fabric, but is NOT an increase--it does NOT ADD any stitches to the fabric. Student must know how to knit, purl, decrease and be comfortable using double pointed needles. $20

 

Great Beginnings with Harriet

Want to make your knitting more interesting and unique from the bottom up? Interested in learning new tricks? Learn provisional, backwards loop, long tail, i-cord, knit-on and tubular cast on methods. Take home a wide range of samples for future reference. She will also teach new ideas for welts (cuffs and bands.) Materials needed: Worsted weight yarn and needles to match (size 7 works well) and a crochet hook 2 sizes larger than your needles (size I for size 7 needles) $20 + any needed materials

 

Knitted Socks with Pamela

Come and learn a basic socks in this 4 week class. With the top-down basic sock pattern, the skills that you will acquire or build upon include: the long-tail cast on, joining the round, knitting in the round, the heel, short rows to turn the heel, gussets, and the kitchner stitch. You will learn to custom fit the sock. Once you've made a sock, you will want to make more and more!
Cost is $80 + materials (determined by project)
Requirement: Students must be comfortable with basic knitting stitches, increases, decreases, long tail cast on and double pointed needles.

Felting

Introduction to Wet Felting with Lauralee **

Bring energy, comfortable clothes and a towel to learn the technique of wet felting. Create a placemat-sized piece of original, usable felt art using colorful carded wool, warm soapy water, bubble wrap, and a swimming noodle. Join Alaska Fiber Artist Lauralee DeLuca for an afternoon of creativity and fun. Call to signup for the next class! $40 plus materials. Call to reserve you space in the next class.

Join with artist Lauralee DeLuca to learn the basics of making a piece of "fiber art". You don’t have to be an artist to make something great! Needle felting is limited only by your imagination. Once you learn some basic techniques, needle felting can be used to add embellishments to your knitted garments or woven fabric or as a stand-alone work of art. In class, you will have an opportunity to make your own ideas come alive with fiber. We will cover basics of both flat and 3-D felting. $40.00 includes 2 needles and color wool assortment. Explore the Magic of creating with felt. In two hours you'll learn the techniques of wet felting with wool blended with other fibers to create a felted bowl from start to finish with MarySue. Once you've completed the class, you can use the technique to create vases, bird houses, cat caves, and other "vessels" of all shapes and sizes -- only limited by our imagination.
Class cost includes all materials and kit to take home.

Learn the art of seamless felting as you form your very own, custom made hat. We’ll be using mostly local wool, a balloon, bubble wrap and your imagination. No previous experience is needed, all levels welcome. 3 hour class. All materials included $65.00

 Felted Vessels with Lauralee

Come learn the process of wet felting around a form to create your own fabulous vessel. The uses are endless: displaying flowers, keeping your valuables, or sitting on a self, you can make a one of a kind work of art from natural fibers. Materials included in the price of the class. $45

 

 Felted Nuno Scarf Class

Nuno scarves are an intriguing collaboration using a silk fabric base and wet felting layers of fibers including wool, mohair, silk and other dyed and natural colored fibers.Come prepared to be amazed at your creations! $55 includes all materials. Call to reserve you space in the next class

Spinning,  Weaving,  & More

Beginning Spinning I with Beth Witters **

Have you ever looked at yarn and wondered how it was created and why it looks and feels the way it does? Learn how to make our own unique handspun yarn! Learn the basics of how to go from raw fiber to colorful novelty yarn beginning with a drop spindle. This class teaches the fundamentals of spinning yarn. Students learn about fiber preparation, principles of twist and how to use a drop spindle to create yarn in the first 3 lessons. The final lesson will demonstrate spinning wheel operation and an introduction to using the spinning wheel. Materials: drop spindle, 2 oz wool roving, large dowel or knitting needle, pencil and paper, an apron or lap cover. Three weeks $60 plus materials

 

Beginning Spinning II with Beth Witters

This class teaches the fundamentals of spinning yarn with a wheel. Students will learn the principles of using a wheel to create yarn in the first 2 lessons. The final lesson discusses and demonstrates spinning other animal and baste fibers.

 

Spinning Exotic Fibers with Lauralee

Exotic fiber class is an introduction with a chance to handle and spin Alpaca, LLama, Camel, Silk, Yak, Cashmere, Dog, Angora, Qiviut (muskox) and more. Class includes a small sample of many different fibers. Knowledge and ability to spin is nice, but non-spinners may enjoy learning about all the fibers also. Call to reserve you space in the next class $50 plus $12.50 for fibers

 

Mawata with MarySue!

Join us for this free class (with purchase of materials). Experiment with fiber, but without the need for special accessories like a spindle or spinning wheel. Learn the technique known as mawata using layers of silk hankies which are drafted into strands that you can use directly to knit or crochet a unique one of a kind scarf or hat. - Call the store to schedule a time to take this fantastic class!

 

Handpaint your yarn with Becky!

Becky Hilliard invites you for an evening of fun and color exploration as you experiment with adding dye to your own yarn. You may choose the weight of yarn from our collection in either white or a solid color, to create your own one of a kind art. Call to signup for the next class. The cost will be $20 plus supplies.

Learn to Weave With Beth Witters **

Learn the steps to creating beautiful fabric on a weaving loom. Students will learn (or review) all the steps of planning a project, winding a warp, and dressing a loom. Students may use the loom in the studio, bring their own table loom, or borrow a rigid heddle loom from the shop. Classes will begin with a three week introduction to weaving and additional lessons are scheduled with Beth as needed. No experience necessary, just a willingness to explore a new fiber art.
Three weeks $60 plus materials.
